The Dog Problem (Movie)

Got my newest DVDs from Netflix today after work…The Dog Problem and The Final Season. ThinkFilm, this movie’s distributor knows how to pick them. Just in the last couple of months I’ve seen (and loved) Life Of the Party, Off The Black, and now The Dog Problem (all distributed by ThinkFilm).

The Dog Problem starring Giovanni Ribisi
The Dog Problem

Anyway, I watched The Dog Problem tonight, and my main description would just be “charming”. Charming throughout in every way, shape, and form. Giovanni Ribisi is charming, his female lead is gorgeous and over the top charming (you just want to protect her for some reason), the dog is beyond cute and charming. The look of the film is even charming. It’s just a charming flippin’ movie all around.

A fairly simple story of a man filled with loneliness who gets a dog. A few background characters to fill his life with, some comical drama in the subplot having to do with owing money to various not-so-scary ‘thugs’, it’s all very lighthearted, nothing too serious, funny to the point of a few good chuckles. Ribisi really does a wonderful job here, as do the other actors including Don Cheadle as Ribisi’s therapist (though he has a very small role). Great photography, a very nice looking Los Angeles to go with the quirky plotlines.

Highly recommend this one.

Squirmy, Life, Noelle or The Mist?

A lot has been going on the past month. Some good, but mostly bad. I lost a dear friend that I truly do cherish. I should note- she didn’t die, but I lost her in that we were in a relationship and that abruptly ended, and I don’t think being the bestest of friends is going to work out. Hopefully we’ll talk still- maybe become friends in time, because I’d hate to lose her totally.

She mentioned that her hamster died. The little guy we bought together. I loved the tiny little runt. We named him squirmy because…well, because he constantly tried to wriggle out of your grip and woudl squirm all over the place. It seems like the end of an era has come…the end of a 2 and a half yr job (for someone else, not me), the end of a life (the hamster), the end of a beautiful relationship (me and her). It’s been pretty rough, and I’m not all that great at taking these things very well. I’ll do fine though…in time.

I haven’t been to a see a movie in forever, so I’m wanting to see one near 4PM. I checked the website (kerasotes.com) for times, and I see Noelle and the Stephen King adaptation (of his novella), The Mist. I want to see The Mist, and I’ve heard really good things about it, but I also remember seeing a preview for Noelle months ago and thinking- that looks like a good one that I’ll probably try to catch.

Noelle is actually a religious film in that it was produced by a Christian company. Tho, I see that Bill Donahue is saying that it’s anti-catholic, which at first turned me off, but I read more about it and watched a few interviews with Crouch (of the production company), and I think it’s probably not going to be upsetting in that regard.

I think I’m going to go with Noelle for today and maybe see The Mist sometime after work this week. Maybe I can find someone to go with me to see that one. We’ll see.

So, I guess I’m off to get ready. Hope everyone is having a fantastic weekend.

Sick Bunny

So, the white bunny that I got just 2 weeks ago is sick. She had a parasite- coccidia that was causing digestive problems, soft poop, and severe dehydration. LNK to her to the vet for me, as I was working (actually I worked 3 extra hrs in the early morning for this to happen- and boy did it tire me out, as I didn’t get off till 11 PM, then had to deal with checking on the rabbits when I got home, worrying about the black (first) rabbits, etc)…

Anyhow- the vet gave her a lactated ringer solution to hydrate her and some medicine to get rid of the parasite and stop the digestive problems. I noticed Friday night that she passed a gelatin looking thing, so that freaked me out, which meant I had to look up all the info. I could, post to a rabbit forum for help (they were VERY helpful), I went out and from advice on a website bought pedialyte to hydrate her (7 dollars a bottle! geez!), put the other rabbit in a different cage…etc.

So, she has her meds (orally taken for 20 days with a little syringe- she’s taken it well the first 2 days!), she has hay and is in the cage alone. She hasn’t drank much, but she’s eating the hay from what I have seen of her chewing on it…I got some of the pedialyte down her via the syringe for the medicine, only about .7 cc’s, but it’s better than nothing…

Luckily, the vet, the fecal tests, the medicine, and the LRS (for hydrating her- it’s a massive injection of fluids straight into her body near her spine and head)only costs $92 total. It took forever to find an actual vet that dealt with exotics who was actually open on Saturday (turns out, this lady is also open on Sundays!) Now, the first bunny has soft poop- she’s totally active, just as she was before…she runs fast, gets away quickly, etc. The vet told LNK that maybe the parasite would pass to the first bunny, but she might be healthy enough to fight it off without help.

I should note- the bunny was sick from the start, and the vet said she saw another bunny from the very same store with the very same parasite but worse. LNK called them to let them know they were selling sick rabbits and I might take the advice of those on the forum I’ve been getting help and info. from and notify the SPCA about it, just to make sure they’re not selling very sick rabbits. I think they should refund my 20 bucks AND pay the nearly $100 vet bill, as it was sick from their store. They won’t do that tho. No way are they going to say yes to that. From what I’ve read, most pet stores are interested in the dollar more than anything else…that’s why they always say never buy from pet stores, get your pets from professional breeders. Unfortunately, the pet store option is so much easier and right there in the open for you to see all the time, so you get into just buying their animals.

Anyhow- I hope the original bunny is okay, she has soft poop and that’s her only problem…and the sick bunny hopefully gets better!

I’m off to get a couple hrs more sleep. I was woken up at 6 AM by sounds…the original bunny escaped from the makeshift uncovered cage- I think I reinforced the barriers enough now where she won’t be making anymore escapes! Let’s keep our fingers crossed in that regard!

PS- here are two pics of Hopper (aka Dennis Hopper the rabbit- I don’t care if she’s a girl, her name is Dennis Hopper!)

4th of July

So…what did everyone do on the 4th of July? I woke up around 11AM, ate an assortment of veggies, went to the pet store to look at bunnies and guinea pigs, took all my loose change (in a pop tart box) to a coinstar machine and got $51…ate grilled hamburgers (the frozen patty kinds- gross), macaroni and cheese, green beans, and corn…went to find a place that sold fireworks and bought some bottle rockets and sparklers (the bottle rockets for my pleasure, the sparklers for someone else)…came back to the house after finding a place that sold fireworks, walked I’d guess a mile to get to the large hill that overlooks the riverfront (Ohio River) for the fireworks…watched them, came home and swam in the pool for over an hour. And, now I’m here after watching an episode of SPACED (British comedy from the makers of Shaun of the Dead), the second season premiere of PEEP SHOW (another British comedy), and eating some macaroni salad, because it’s good and it’s good for you. It’s probably not, but let’s pretend…

I have a second bunny now. A lop eared white bunny. It’s a female, same as the first. It’s not mine actually, but it’s staying here sort of. Complicated. They’re currently snuggled together (again), and they’re both on their sides. This is doubly good- they have bonded AND they both feel comfortable and safe (on their sides, no legs under them to quickly get away from danger.)

I’d get a pic of them snuggling together, but it’s hard enough to see thru the cage bars, let alone not arouse their suspicion by moving all close when they’re trying to nap. I have no doubt, when I get out of this chair to lie down in bed, they will be moving about from my slight movement, soft sounds, what have you…Oh well. It’s cute, and you’ll just have to take my word for it.

I need to check to see when MONSTER HOUSE opens. I want to see that movie.

Rabbit Toilet (aka Rabbit’s Bed)

I think I mentioned that I bought the bunny a litter pan and litter…she had been peeing in it very well- I could see the wet litter pellets, and I think she was going #2 in it as well.  Today, I see no wet spots in the litter, and she drank nonstop last night and this morning (it kept waking me up last night).  Now, I scooped some of the dry litter on top of the wet stuff yesterday, maybe that caused her do get confused?  No idea.

Now, I added the rest of the small bag of litter pellets into the pan, and what does she do?  I show her droppings, then try to get her to see that I am placing them in the litter pan- this is where you go potty, see?  I do that several times, then I leave her alone.  5 minutes later I hear her in the litter pellets- they look like little white beads that came with the pan…but is she using the bathroom?  No, she’s on her side, her legs splayed out, her head nuzzled in a corner of the pan, and she’s napping!

I walked over there with a flashlight (there’s little light in that area at night), to get a better view…even standing right above her cage looking down into it, and she doesn’t move an inch.

I guess I’ll have to wait and see if this will be her bed and potty or just bed…hopefully it’ll be neither and it’ll be JUST potty, and she can nuzzle into the bedding in a corner for bed.

Bunny’s New Bed

UPDATED WITH PICS BELOW

I have a bunny, as I mentioned before on this site. It’s a black dwarf with a white belly, some gray on it- a tiny bit.  Very small…very shy, but very gentle.  She hasn’t tried to bite once, and she’s never gotten anywhere near aggressive.

Anyhow- last night I bought her some new bedding.  I WAS using just newspaper laid down in the cage.  I was short on funds due to my mom’s death which caused me to lose a week of work…so, I was going the cheap route.  I had some money on my mastercard, so I got her some absorbent recycled paper product bedding.  I also got her a litter training kit…it was for ferrets, but the girl said the only difference is- this one has a ferret on the shovel as opposed to a bunny’s face.  Too bad the other difference is that the bunny’s poop is smaller than the slits in the shovel, so it just flies right thru the holes and is worthless.

I was told to put some of her fecal pellets in there to let her know this is where you go potty from now on…I sat it in one corner, opposite side of the cage from the food and the water bottle which are on separate sides of that one end.  I came home from taking someone to their house and she HAD used the litter pan to poop and pee in.  Great job, tho she did go outside of it a few times.  Hopefully she is one of the bunnies that can be trained.  Will make clean up so much easier.

She LOVES the bedding.  She must…as she’s totally lying down all night tonight.  On her side, almost on her back even!  This means she feels very safe.  With her on her side, that means her legs aren’t under her- meaning, if she felt danger, she wouldn’t be able to quickly hop away from that danger.  So, her legs to her side means comfort, as she has to take the time to get up and THEN flee.  She looks very cute resting on the bedding on her side…I hardly get to see her white underside.  She’s just lying there, looks passed out, tho they usually sleep during the day time hours and are awake at night and early morning.  Forget the term for that sort of sleeping pattern, but whatever.  I can NEVER tell when she’s sleeping (so far).  The key is- her nose won’t twitch when asleep…they often sleep with their eyes open actually, so it’s hard to tell.

I’m glad she’s comfortable, has nice soft bedding, a new litter pan, plenty of hay and all of that good stuff.  I’ll try to get pics of her lying down in a bit, if she doesn’t hear me and immediately jump up to investigate, as is the case usually.

Here are two pics.  Not the greatest through the cage bars, but better than nothing…she noticed the flash and poked her head up in the second one.
