Drum Corps

DCI News: Cadets Bested by 4 Corps in San Antonio?

First off, I haven’t seen any of this year’s DCI shows. They canceled the yearly show in Evansville (after 30 years due to costs), and I haven’t had the resources to travel anywhere, so…I’ve no idea what we’re dealing with. I have seen clips of the Cadets show and read all about the controversy.

I will say that I totally disagree with where Hopkins is taking the Cadets. Heck, the constant name changes for the corps is enough to annoy me (Holy Name Cadets, Garfield Cadets, Cadets of Bergen County, Cadets). This whole idea of a drum corps show turning into almost a play-of-sorts is bad bad bad. When I saw their announcement of the show and saw it had a big storyline and lots of dialogue, I cringed and asked an invisible Hoppy- “what are you doing???!” So, the Cadets, who I used to love so much- let’s just say these past few years I haven’t been a fan. I just don’t like the vocals, the weird themes, the drum mouth sounds as opposed to- get this…drums! I’m all for varied styles and such, but this just bugs me.

With that out of the way, I saw the Cadets daily update and EMail, and wow. They were 3.65 points behind Blue Devils!

And Carolina Crown has beat them a number of times this season. Crazy. Good to see the Bluecoats (one of my favorite corps and one I nearly marched with) doing so well. Sad to see the Crossmen down there at the bottom.

And, finally the Madison Scouts. Seriously? What happened to you guys? You’ll notice they’re not even on the list above. And that’s because they didn’t even secure a spot in the Southwesten Championship! Too sad. I love these guys. Has never been the best of the best (they’ve won titles, no doubt, but they’ve never been consistently one of the best corps), but they’ve always been a fan fave because of their unbridled power and flat out knock you out of your seat hornline. Hopefully they’ll make a quick return to the top 12. Truth be told, it doesn’t look like it will matter in a few years, as DCI is in such a decline they won’t even televise the world championships this year. They’ll still produce and charge $40 for the DVD of said event tho (I assume)…

UPDATE (July 20, 2008- 6:20pm): From what I read over at Drum Corps Planet, it seems there was a lot of rain in San Antonio and the Cadets had a points violation due to a fall I presume. Didn’t read the entire thread, but there was a points violation somewhere that seemed to be connected to the slippery turf.

From reading Hop’s livejournal blog (I found it, but I don’t recall the url at the moment), it looks like there were also housing problems the day before and some musical problems as well.

1984 Velvet Knights- “All Night Long”

1984 VK All Night Long & NBC

Brilliant. Loved Velvet Knights back in the day. Just discovered they’re touring this year (tourer last year partially). They’re DIV III, I believe, and they’re nowhere near the same caliber, but maybe one day…

You can argue the position of pure drum corps and no room for this sort of stuff, but you can hardly deny that these guys had some musical chops.

Creating a Startup (Local Drum Corps)

I’ve decided I’m going to start a local drum corps. I’ve given myself 3 years to complete this mission. That’s not very long time in the grand scheme of things. I will post more later, I have just some general ideas for now.

Drum corps fans, music lovers, board members of local businesses (cough cough), wealthy philanthropists who want to give back to our youth…comment or contact me at josh@thebluesite.com with any ideas, assistance, inquiries, etc.

For now, a short list of random thoughts:

  • corporate sponsors
  • grant money (arts councils and such)
  • bingo (church participation)
  • local high school instructors/former band members/former instructors and caption heads
  • charities/charity events
  • local high schools- equipment, uniforms, practice space
  • local contacts (arts contacts for concerts, demos, clinics, community outreach

Drums On The Ohio 2007 (Evansville, Indiana)

Drum corps show…gotta love ‘em. Really great stuff most of the time.

We went to Drums On the Ohio tonight at Central High School (in Evansville, Indiana).

    The lineup-

    Revolution
    Memphis Sound
    Blue Stars
    Troopers
    Spirit from JSU
    Blue Devils

It was the 30th year for this event, and I’ve been the past 5 or 6 years. I went in high school every year as well, but that was 1997 and before. We had general reserved seating for $9. They moved it this to year from Reitz high school to Central high school. No idea why, and not sure where it will be next year. The seating at the new school is terrible compared to the old. The Reitz bowl (as they call it) is set into the ground in a bowl-like shape. The press box is set on a hill and the seats start from the top of the hill down a slope to the field and track below. So, you actually enter and go downhill to get to your seats, and it’s fairly deep, so there are a lot of seats and a lot of room. There’s very little room at Central (it seems much smaller, but I’ve no idea about square footage or anything). The seats are much smaller and much more cramped. No room for long legs.

The area is filled with more distractions too. The acoustics might actually be a bit better at Central, but there were cars driving by on the road next to the stadium which got annoying when used to Reitz and it’s relative isolation on a hill away from any surface streets.

The bands were all really great tonight. Corps from div iii and div i- 2 from div iii, in fact. The Troopers, who I have never seen susprised me with an exciting show that was halfway jazzy. Who knew? Revolution (a new corps, I guess) didn’t blow my socks off, but they were pretty good for their small size and obvious lack of a lot of funds (they had a small plastic covering and a table holding their merchandise…the others had trailers filled with goodies).

The Bluedevils were the main attraction, and they did blow my socks off. They had very cool visuals, the guard was actually interesting (and I usually say- you could do drum corps and drop guard totally and I wouldn’t be one bit upset- most of the time.) I probably wouldn’t have said that for BD tonight. Their show is jazzy, somewhat dark at points, very loud and very clean. Very very crisp from what I could tell with my semi-untrained ear. I’m a percussionist, so don’t ask me about horns. The drumline was very tight as well. Very cool moves from the snares. They transitioned from big low-toned drums on the sidelines back to the snares. They had a segment where they did very quick field movements ala the style usually seen with Cavaliers where they played the snares and the bigger drums in between notes. A lot of their field show itself reminded me of a Cavaliers-style show with the very tight moves at high speed. Dizzying in some regards.

The other corps had a good night as well, but you can’t help but concentrate on BD.

    The encore…

Blue Devils drum corps- June 28, 2007, Evansville, Indiana
I snapped this picture during the Blue Devils encore.

This is where the new venue was perfect. At Reitz- you cannot get this close. I walked down to the fence next to the track around the field…the pit was maybe 3 feet away. I could have had a conversation with the mallets if I wanted to.

This stuff was great. The Blue Devils are tight- they’re very loud, and very clean for the most part. High tenors in a concert arc- it’s mind blowing and ear-drum blowing. I personally like that stuff. From the looks of it, everyone else liked it too.

This was the best drum corps experience of my life. Even with better shows, you don’t get much better than listening to the Blue Devils in a concert arc feet from you. The battery was maybe 10 feet away.

I liked pretty much all of the corps tonight. And I liked all of their shows for the most part. There were parts of 1 or 2 of the shows I didn’t care for…they got a bit boring, but it was a nice surprise, as I usually dislike 1 or 2 shows during the night.

I might see about upcoming shows in Illinois or Ohio. Who knows.

DCI (Drum Corps International) Moving Headquarters/Finals to Indianapolis

DCI (Drum Corps International) the governing body of drum corps is moving its offices to Indianapolis in 2008 and will be holding the DCI World Championships in the new Lucas Oil stadium (which will open in 2008) through 2018. Great news for drum corps fans in Indiana, no doubt.

The championships are usually held in a different city every year, so this news might upset fans outside of Indiana, especially fans on either coast. This means there’s no chance there local venue will host a championship for the next decade, and they also have to travel to the center of the country to get to the show.

The RCA Dome is already home to Bands of America championships, so the city makes sense for drum corps.

I’m going to have to get tickets to this event in 2008- it should be, according to press releases be the stadium’s inaugural event. The stadium pictures look sort of silly to me- the outside design is odd…it’s a shame to see something other than the big dome of the RCA Dome (formerly the Hoosier Dome) where it should be…well, the dome is still there, of course, but future views of what the city will look like.

I’ve only been to the Dome for state marching band competitions, never to see the Colts, but for that purpose, it’s never worked well at all- the acoustics are terrible for marching bands…the stadium, being an inside venue, has an echo effect that is just awful for marching bands. Unfortunately, the future stadium to replace it will have a retractable roof that might be closed during the championships- let’s hope the acoustics are better.

Anyhow- to the subject of companies holding the naming rights to stadiums- I hate the idea. It’s lame. It’s so sad when you have to go see a ballgame in a stadium named after an oil company or a drug company or a beverage company. What’s next? Viagra stadium? Our roof is guaranteed to stay rigid the entire season? Money is good for business, it’s good for making a better venue, it’s good for making that venue better after it’s built and finished- but there has got to be a better way…

Speaking of being a better way. From my research, it seems that, as usual, government can’t do much of anything right. In regards to the stadium, it seems the state government got a bit confused on the math and just figured out in August that the new stadium will cost $10 million more to run than the RCA Dome per year. They’re also running out of money quickly, and they still have 2 years before the stadium even opens. They set aside $50 as backup money, but they’re down to $17 of that original sum!

Here’s my complaint- tax hikes. Now, this is a political issue, and it’s off topic sort of, but it’s important, so I will go ahead on this path….BUT, I will do so in a new post altogether.

On the drum corps front- I haven’t followed the scores, but I’m happy to see that the Bluecoats (one of my favorite corps) took 4th place…they beat the Cadets!! That’s HUGE…their highest placing EVER. Great to hear. They deserved it. Shocking to see the Cadets fall back so far after their win last year with the highest finals score ever (tied with Cavaliers score in 2002 [I think it was 2002...don't quote me on it].)

Let’s hope the problems with the stadium are fixed in time for this event…
