Beautiful Women

Nicole Biggins (Sirius XM Morning Mashup) Aka The Blank VHS Girl

This is funny. We have a MILLION of these boxes at work with VHS tapes. I’ve often asked what’s up with the weird photo on the boxes- you immediately notice their attempt to be as diverse as possible. A white guy with his arm around a hispanic-lookin’ gal, and they’re sitting next to a black girl, and they all look creepy weird excited to be watching a movie together.

Was listening to Opie and Anthony on the way to work this morning, and they were talking about this girl- Nicole Biggins (sorry, but what a horrible name!)…she’s a jock on this Sirius XM show, the Morning Mashup.

Final comment- she’s painfully beautiful. One of those girls you look at and it just pains you that she’s so stunning. Curse her for that, I say. Curse her.

The Good Life With Robert Palmer

Some People Can Do What They Like
Robert Palmer’s 1974 album Some People Can Do What They Like

I think I said the same thing here a few years ago, but it’s worth repeating. Everytime I see this album cover, I think to myself- ‘this is one cool guy, and he sure is living the good life.’

I see this cover, and I envy Palmer like you wouldn’t believe. And who knows why…I don’t think sitting in the grass playing cards while a taxi waits sounds all that fun, but in this picture it looks like heaven for some reason.

Unfortunately, I’m not a fan of the tracks on this particular album.

Squirmy, Life, Noelle or The Mist?

A lot has been going on the past month. Some good, but mostly bad. I lost a dear friend that I truly do cherish. I should note- she didn’t die, but I lost her in that we were in a relationship and that abruptly ended, and I don’t think being the bestest of friends is going to work out. Hopefully we’ll talk still- maybe become friends in time, because I’d hate to lose her totally.

She mentioned that her hamster died. The little guy we bought together. I loved the tiny little runt. We named him squirmy because…well, because he constantly tried to wriggle out of your grip and woudl squirm all over the place. It seems like the end of an era has come…the end of a 2 and a half yr job (for someone else, not me), the end of a life (the hamster), the end of a beautiful relationship (me and her). It’s been pretty rough, and I’m not all that great at taking these things very well. I’ll do fine though…in time.

I haven’t been to a see a movie in forever, so I’m wanting to see one near 4PM. I checked the website (kerasotes.com) for times, and I see Noelle and the Stephen King adaptation (of his novella), The Mist. I want to see The Mist, and I’ve heard really good things about it, but I also remember seeing a preview for Noelle months ago and thinking- that looks like a good one that I’ll probably try to catch.

Noelle is actually a religious film in that it was produced by a Christian company. Tho, I see that Bill Donahue is saying that it’s anti-catholic, which at first turned me off, but I read more about it and watched a few interviews with Crouch (of the production company), and I think it’s probably not going to be upsetting in that regard.

I think I’m going to go with Noelle for today and maybe see The Mist sometime after work this week. Maybe I can find someone to go with me to see that one. We’ll see.

So, I guess I’m off to get ready. Hope everyone is having a fantastic weekend.

The Magic of Touching Up a Photo

Here is a page full of pictures that have been touched up. Some of these will blow you away.

Reminds me of a few books I saw once while browsing at Barnes and Noble with before and after pics of women before they were done up with makeup and after…some of these women were downright ugly- painfully ugly, some of them…but, you add some makeup and a good stylist does some work with the hair and all, and BAM- a totally new person.

Captivity (Movie)

Elisha Cuthbert in Captivity

Went to see Captivity this past week. I was really looking forward to this film. Despite the fact that Elisha Cuthbert is a terrible actress (if you ask me, and you didn’t), she’s just so darned cute. Cute enough to want to watch sitting in a room, kidnapped, semi-tortured every now and then? Well, that depends on if you have a thing for Elisha Cuthbert, I guess. When I say her name in my head, it sounds so absurd.

Anyhow- it’s really a decent flick. I’d call it a horror movie, but it’s really a thriller/horror genre film. It seems like one of the new breed of torture ‘porn’ films like Hostel and similar movies…but, it’s really not. It’s actually not really all that gross, and there’s really not that much in terms of torture. One lady gets the short end of the ‘having a good day’ stick, but outside of that, it’s actually fairly tame. It’s more psychological in the same vein of the first Saw film.

Cuthbert plays a self absorbed actress/model (really not sure if she’s one or both) who clearly lives a very fake life. What is real in the celebrity age anyhow? Like many people in her situation, she’s not all that happy overall. She wants some time off to relax, but her hetic schedule won’t allow it…she goes to a bar (with her tiny dog in tow) to take part in some charity event, but before you know it, she’s drugged and kidnapped by some weirdo who has some mysterious, yet clearly devious, plans in store for her.

We see the kidnapper only in shadow. He wears a spooky looking black cape sort of outfit, his face always in shadow. Cuthbert pleads to be let go, but she knows deep down that that’s never going to happen. There are some gross, but not overly gross, parts of the film where Cuthbert is forced to drink a smoothie of sorts, but that’s all I’ll say about that. The guy plays video clips of her past interviews in the room he’s built for her, he stresses her with very loud sounds and bright lights, he makes he think she’s about to be killed, and more. It’s all very psychological, especially when we see the kidnapper’s hands putting together little magazine letter cutouts of various words such as ‘how to choose the victim’ and that sort of thing that explains her situation.

Cuthbert discovers she’s not the only captive in the building as well. There’s a man who has been kidnapped in the room next to her, and this leads to numerous twists and turns that are interesting, though somewhat predictable.

The film is beautifully shot…it is VERY well done technically. The director does a nice job in the genre as well- the right things stand out when they need to, and the camera is used to up the ante every now and then. Cuthbert’s acting isn’t too bad in this one. I halfway believed she was the lucky yet lonely celebrity who lives her life in a such a way that she truly can’t completely tell what is real and what isn’t. Real is what you can touch, one of the characters tells the other.

The movie was very short, and that shows in the storyline build up. It starts off rather quickly- there’s no 1 hour wait time to get to the action like some recent horror films (Wolfcreek, for example), but the big twists come too soon, it seems…and there’s not enough to hold it all together in the end. I liked the film, don’t get me wrong, but it was just too short (running time around 1 hour 15 minutes), and it felt like the writers just didn’t have enough material to fill out other areas that could have been covered more indepth and maybe a bit better.

Horror movie? Thriller? A mix of both? In the end, it’s a bit of both, and it’s a worthwhile viewing for fans of either genre.

Egypt Is Back!

Egypt

Egypt, from that show, Home Delivery, from about a year or so ago is back! She’s doing some internet show connected to America’s Top Model on UPN (soon to be CW). I didn’t read much of the info, just saw her pic and recognized her.

I wonder if we’re still getting married…I’ll have to remember to ask her about all of that.

Jane Monheit

Minus the nose ring, Jane Monheit is really pretty…

Jane Monheit

I was watching the PBS HD channel today and they had Jazz Legends with Ramsey Lewis. This episode was “contemporary jazz,” and they had George Duke, Lee Ritenour, and the one and only bassist Marcus Miller (who I am listening to as I write this.)

I went to the website and they have one episode with David Sanborn, another with Dave Grusin, Jane Monheit and the wonderful John Pizzarelli share the stage for the episode of American songbook standards.

You can check out more at the legends of jazz website.
